Kidneys and Cleansing Herbs

The kidneys are bean-shaped organ, each approximately one fist in size. They are found on either side of your spine, just below the rib cage. They help the body to excrete waste as urine. They also help to filter the blood.

  • Filters of waste, drugs and toxic product from the body
  • Hormones production that leads to regulation of red blood cells, bone health and blood pressure.

Kidney Cleansing Herbs:

In our modern lives, we face a much greater amount of pollutants and toxins from the food we consume, the drinking water and the air we breathe in. This gives stress to our kidneys. Adding a few herbs to the diet will help purify and alleviate tension in your kidneys.

1. Parsley

Parsley (Petroselinum crispum) is beneficial for your health because it contains strong antioxidants that improve the immune system. It also has many minerals, such as phosphorus, calcium and iron. Urine production has also been reported to increase so that hazardous toxins can be filtered out.

Parsley, on the other hand, has long been seen as an effective herb for kidney health. The dried tea and the fresh herb are also prescribed to help with stones or infections of the kidneys. Parsley juice is often seen as too strong for self-drink and can when juicing, be combined with other fruits or vegetables. Because of its detoxification effect, it is not well tolerated in an empty stomach and is absorbed even less slowly when using with food, thus avoiding slight side-effects.

2. Ginger

We used Ginger (Zingiber officinale) as a fresh root or powder with a slightly sweet, warm flavour for its culinary uses. It is also rich in nutrients and is widely used in herbal medicine. Ginger antioxidants may neutralize free radicals causing damage and inflammation to cells and tissues, including the kidneys. Zingerone is an ingredient found in the root of the ginger that can protect against inflammation of the kidneys.

Studies have shown that an antioxidant diet improves oxidative stress in renal disease patients. Ginger will also help to reduce blood sugar levels by supplementing the diet. High blood sugar levels can cause organ damage, and if blood sugar levels are chronically high, the kidneys are at risk. Research also indicates the stimulation of antioxidant enzyme activity in the Kidney by using 200 mg of ginger extract per kilogram of body weight.

3. Stinging Nettle

The stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) is used both as a culinary herb and also as medicine. It functions as a diuretic, improves the production of urine and assists in removing metabolic waste. The treatment of common kidney diseases with nettle is approved in some European countries. Stinging nettle has anti-inflammatory properties because it inhibits the development of so-called prostaglandins as natural inflammatory substances in the body.

Excess water may be separated from the body by a settling nettle. It is useful for treating infections of the urinary tract. It can help remove bacteria from the renal and urinary tract by increasing the amount of urine. It can be used as irrigation therapy to relieve inflammation by pushing a large volume of fluid through the kidneys. Some people use stinging nettle to stop kidney stones and cure them.

4. Corn Silk

Corn (Zea mays) is rich in nutrients and consumed in many dishes, either alone or as an ingredient. Very few people know that the big, silky fibres on the top of the corn ear are good for the cleansing of the kidneys in particular. In the past, corn silk had been commonly used for its diuretic effects that led to the treatment of urinary inflammation.

Corn silk minimizes the risk of developing kidney stones and flush out deposits. Saponins and tannins enhance the production of urine as a natural diuretic. Corn silk decreases the concentration of salt in the urine and removes smaller stones that may have already been built up in the Kidney.

Many herbs are useful for the function of the Kidney, but you need guidelines for the use and dose if you have kidney disease. Some herbs may not be appropriate for people who take or suffer from severe health issues.
